The method of making websites is web design. It includes many different areas, including the layout of
the web page, creation of content and graphic design.
Although the terms web design and web development are often used interchangeably, technically, web
design is a subset of the wider web development category.
A markup language called HTML is used to build websites.
Using HTML tags that describe the content and metadata of each page, web designers create webpages and develop them.
Using CSS, or cascading style sheets, the layout and appearance of the elements inside a webpage are
usually specified. Many websites therefore contain a mixture of HTML and CSS that determines how each
page in a browser will appear.
Some web designers tend to code pages by hand (type HTML and CSS from scratch), while others,
including Adobe Dreamweaver, use a “WYSIWYG” editor in which a visual interface for designing the web
page layout is generated and the program automatically generates the corresponding HTML and CSS code.
A content management system like WordPress or Joomla is another common way to design websites.
These services offer various models for a website which can be used as a starting point for a new website.
Webmasters are then able to use a web-based interface to add content and customize the layout.
